The Do's and Don't After car washing

Updated: Mar 19, 2022

If you're like many people, you enjoy spending a weekend afternoon washing your car. It's a great way to spend some time outside and make your car look great. But there are a few things you should keep in mind after washing your car to protect its finish and keep it looking nice for longer. We're going to look at how to protect your car after washing and some aftercare tips for car washing.

The Do's After Car Washing

  • Clean all hoses used during the washing process. Spray them with a hose or water to remove dirt and soap residue. Rinse away any remaining debris with plain water, then dry both the hoses and the nozzle heads completely with a soft, clean towel or cloth.

  • Thoroughly rinse away any wheel cleaner from wheel surfaces. If the wheel cleaner is allowed to dry on the wheel surface, it could become difficult or impossible to remove later. Spray a generous amount of water over all-wheel surfaces and hubs until they are free of soap residue. Then, wipe off any remaining water with a soft sponge or towel.

  • Return your vehicle's wiper blades to their normal position on the windshield and front side windows, if they were moved for washing purposes. Open any sunroofs and rear windows completely. Finally, using a squeegee or a soft cloth, remove any excess water from those hard-to-reach areas.

  • Reattach any removed emblems, license plates, or other exterior pieces. Make sure all screws, bolts, and nuts are tight and secure.

  • Check the pressure in your tires and adjust if necessary. Low tire pressure can cause premature wear on the tires.

  • Take a few minutes to inspect the exterior. Then, if it's possible to do so without causing damage or getting yourself dirty, examine the underside of your vehicle as well. If there are any loose parts, nuts, bolts, hoses, clamps, or wires that could become a problem later on you should tighten them now.

  • Apply some wax or sealant to your car's tires after washing them. This will help prevent them from cracking or developing rust during the winter months when it's more likely that they'll sit dormant for long periods.

  • Use a soft cloth to dry the car, starting from the top and working your way down

The Don'ts After Car Washing

  • Don't start the engine or drive the car until all areas have dried completely.

  • Don't leave your car at the wash site longer than necessary. If you're not going to leave, be sure to ask someone to keep an eye on it for you.

  • Don't apply any non-water-based cleaners to your vehicle at the car wash.

  • Do not leave rubber mats over the floor right after washing the car – they may cause water spots.

  • Do not use a chamois leather to dry the car – it will leave scratches;

  • Do not forget to apply wax or polish after washing.

After Care Tips for Car Washing

  • Apply a coat of wax to the car. This will help to protect it from the elements and will make it easier to clean in the future.

  • If you live in a cold climate, consider using a winterizing product to protect your car from the cold weather.

  • If you have to park your car in the sun, consider using a sunshade to protect it from the heat.

  • Park in the shade. The sun’s UV rays are very damaging to the paint, so try to keep it in the shade when you can.

  • Use a cover if you have room in your garage or outside. If it’s not possible to park your car in the shade, make sure it has at least some cover from the sun.

  • Keep the rain away from your car. If you get caught out in a storm, be sure to dry it quickly before any water sits on the surface for too long. Water will start to rust the metal parts of your car if left too long. A soft chamois cloth can help absorb some of the water quickly.

  • Regularly clean your car’s windows and mirrors. A good way to do this is with a mixture of vinegar and water.

  • Spray your car with a good protectant to keep the paint looking new.
